If a pro makes something hard look easy that means he has skill.
I think it's disrespectful to change the game so that years of dedication and hard work is punished!
I for one like watching pro athletes pull of feats that I could never do. Maybe I'm just crazy but I think that's how it should be .

But the multilayered ball(s) can only explain the steep rise for the next few years (until nearly all players have switched), maybe up until 2003 if you look at the graph of relative ball type usage they show. What explains the relatively steep and steady rise from ca. 1994 up to ca. 2005? Did they just have a decade of annually vastly improved golf balls? Just looking at the graph, the 2000/2001 jump is pretty steep, but it doesn't stand out too much from the overall trend which took a decade. I think this video was too focused on that 1 type of ball and ignored the rest.

They did that to prevent the ball from peeling. Almost every ball from before the revolutionized golf ball, has been peeled after four or five hits, and my brother sometimes did it in two. But then when we go out to buy new ones, it never peels. Even putting every bit of power that my brother had, (he bench presses more than 150) he still couldn’t do it. So perhaps this is just a side effect.

The American industry is the problem why sports are becoming a hassle and too complicated. Seriously, a whole sport might become "boring and unchallenging" because an innovation in golfball technology...

It's the same with 9/11. Blow up a building and the industry is flooded with people wanting blood so the budget skyrockets but at the cost of innocent people loosing lives for personal gain. This whole *Anti-terrorism* campaign was just a get rich quick scheme that went terribly wrong and cost normal civilians their safety and civility while the perpetrators are laughing at our expenses...

As I lay Down and look up
I was a caddy In Michigan when the prov1 was released. These balls were five dollars a ball in a sleeve. I thought it was absolutely crazy that people would spend five dollars on a golf ball. But when I saw the difference in flight and distance this golf ball could provide. I saw my golfers handicap drop a little

If you want to talk crazy... Tiger Woods average 323 of the tee in 1997, the week he won the masters. If Tiger had had modern 2019 clubs back in 1997, he would have averaged about 30 yard longer of the tee!

Whats causing this rise?
1) Much more athletic pro golfers, who now all train for power and length off the tee.
2) Drivers, that 1) Produces higher launch, 2) less spin, 3) have bigger sweet-spots for less ball speed loss on mishits and 4) have a lot less gear effect, meaning straighter drives, meaning you can swing all out without being afraid of a 50 yard slice.
3) Longer and lighter shafts for increased swing-speed (In year 2000 Tigers driver had a 43,5" 130g steel shaft. Now its a 44.5" 60g graphite shaft)
6) Balls with 1) more aerodynamic-efficient dimple patterns, 2) that produces less spin - which in turn creates longer carry.
2) Shorter grass on the fairway, meaning longer rolls.
All in all, its not the ball. If the balls hadn't changed since 2000, we woulds still see an increase in carry distance... and the average haven't really increased since 2000, when there were set a limit on the drivers. Its only been a few yards of average increase since year 2000, so its not the ball, its everything else mainly and the ball a little.
Take a 2019 ProV1 and hit a driver from year 1999 and hit a driver from 2019. The carry difference will be about 15-20 yards. Now take a 2019 driver and hit a Titleist Professional 90 from 1997 and put it op against a 2019 ProV1, and you'll see about 10 yards more carry. Now consider then, that pros are becoming stronger, faster and more powerful and you have a potent mix. But in all honesty, the average distance on the pga tour haven't changes much since year 2000-ish.

At 0:06... its only 510 yards par 5. Any pro hitting the fairway can easily get there in two... this is not a long hole. Hell, I could get there in two if I could hit the fairway with my driver!

Hey are players are really good at the game like it's just getting better and better what should we do
Running:let's make sure everyone has to have the same standerd of equipment for the race but other than that they can go nuts
Rugby:let's give the ref a camera on his body so we can make sure his calls are fair since these guys are so big and fast now it could be easier to make a mistake but let's let them be better
Basketball:these guys jump high alri let's just out them on a shoe
Literally every other sport:let's make sure that the game is still fair for everyone so they all have a bare minimum standerd equipment but let's not limit ingenuity

I'm not a golfer balls and sticks aren't my thing but an obvious solution would be to agree on the balls to be used before the whacking starts I'm serious if I don't like your balls I don't want to go whacking with you and if you have some kind of super techno balls and I only have my dimply old generic balls well whacking isn't gonna be much fun for either one of us now is it ? If your balls decide the outcome then forget whacking let's just see who's balls are more techno!!!

The first golf ball was made out of wood and it traveled about 75 yards on a good hit with a driver. The golf ball has been getting more efficient since then and over the years longer and longer. The new balls go a long way but they make the game of golf more exciting and watchable. I wouldn't change a thing about the golf ball.

Dear Vox,
Why must you lie about EVERYTHING?
"It's the steepest part of this trend line" (referring to 2000 to 2001)
2000 273.18
2001 279.35
Difference 6.17
2002 279.35
2003 286.30
Difference 6.46
Just say "One of the steepest" and be honest for once.

Vox don't play golf i take it... because Wilson had a solid core ball - the Ultra back in the 80's. Not long after Wilson, there was Pinnacle- Titleist's other brandname that was solid well before the ProV.
Also, there is a PGA rule that a ball can only fly x feet\second when hit with a clubhead speed of y(sorry i dont know the numbers off the top of my head). Old balls were not far short of the PGA limit. So while the ball helps, club improvement, swing improvement also help.

You are correct, but that doesn't mean the video isn't correct either. F=ma. Greater mass for the same force results in less acceleration. Using S=ut + 1/2at^2, we know that lower acceleration results in less displacement, both vertically and horizontally. Less vertical displacement means that the total available flight time is reduced. #Kinematics
Raymond Menz
Raymond Menz - Month ago
all things being the same :
with a golf swing above 100mph a heavier golf ball will travel further. Golf ball rules are designed for pro tour players - "a ball must weigh LESS than"
with a golf swing under 90mph a heavier golf ball travels less distance than a lighter ball. A high handicap golfer is better off with a lighter ball.
So ball weight counters drag, and the big hitter has a much bigger drag problem. Ball weight also counters lift. But lift is good for the slow swing and probably bad for the big hitter.
When US pro golfers go to Britian they all use the British golf ball which is smaller. A smaller ball travels faster and further - more aerodynamic.
The answer to reducing the distance a golf ball is hit is to make the ball bigger - less aerodynamic.

It will fix itself when you start focusing on players skills rather on how can we "help them" to be better. Once the playing act itself will be considered a challenge not winning the challenge whatever it takes...just to get "the prize" and I mean lots and lots o $$ .... money ruins everything...

Raymond Menz

Golf has gone from 5000 metres in length to 7000 metres. The cost of the extra land and maintenance is killing golf courses and clubs. Club fees are relatively higher so people are dropping out in the millions. As a golfer I regularly played 9 holes instead of 18. Also Watson could have ended up in the trees - goodbye to millions.

The distance argument (balls go too far) only relates to pros. The weekend hackers (99% of all golfers) still skunk it only around 180-220 yards, regardless of any new equipment. Also, there are already rules to limit the distance of both golf balls and clubs (compression/etc).
