Are American prisoners modern day slaves? - BBC

What a dumb and misleading documentary. "Legal Slavery" Committing a crime is a choice it's not a condition of one's circumstances. And what do they expect us to do with people who commit serious crimes just let him go?

Food for thought: prisons could look very different and so could law.
"A crime is an action that does harm to a person. Every criminal shall be unfree und indebted to their victim until the criminal pays full reperation to the victim." This would be 100% just.

On paper, the purpose of prison is to rehabilitate criminals so that may be able to re-enter and function ethically in society. But how could prisons provide this service when their prisoners are so busy maintaining their own punishment?

First of all, prisoners in the US, IMHO, are treated with kid gloves. There is really no punishment. They join into different gangs. The work they do, the one's trustworthy enough, work in the prison instead of hiring outside help. They should work and cook, do laundry. My opinion, they should take out the gyms and weightlifting machines. Take out the televisions. They should work 12 hrs hard labor, then have time for shower and bed, too tired to act like a fool. The Correction Officers are in harms way 24/7, when you have prisoners with nothing to do but watch tv and lift weights, 3 meals and a bed. Prison USED to be the LAST PLACE you want to go. The way they are run now, the scare factor is gone. The death penalty is no longer a deterrent. Used to be public hangings, Old Sparky electrocution, now it's peaceful euthanasia.
I personally feel they should feel the same pain as their victims as they die.
I am so sick of all the snowflake BS rights groups. When you are convicted and go to prison you are to be punished. Period. Me, personally, would like old fashion public hangings like the early 20th Century.

They aren't slaves they're criminals they shouldn't be paid anything they should be made to work to pay for their upkeep instead of leaching off the taxpayers, why should we pay for their criminal behavior, the liberal leftists want to coddle them they ALREADY receive a better deal in prison than alot of the poor! Liberals are a waste of education ! The poor need the money we waste on those criminals most of whom are worthless drop outs who sponge of society their whole lives and never give anything back but a pack of kids who are usually just as sorry as themselves! The cycle Needs to end putting these criminals to work is the least expensive way to deal with them! If you don't like to work don't do the crimes!

Well, in the Dominican Republic, some jails are literally a big room holding hundreds of prisoners during the heat of summer who are not given a single meal unless a family member comes and brings them food, and that’s IF they know they went in jail and which one. Compare to that, an American prison is like a 5-star hotel.

this is ridiculous! At the end of the month those of us out of jail also don't have much left over after paying for everything. My medical is over $500 a month, rent, utilities, food, car, car insurance, clothes, washing clothes, taxes on income and when purchasing....there is nothing left. These criminals need to pay for all the services they use including the police, judges, attorneys, the building the courts are in the utilities, paper, copy machines, the prison guards, the prisons itself, lights, food, etc...those are all expenses/services used by these criminals. $0.20 take home is about right. BBC is a joke.

I would love our prisoners to become labourers. It sure as hell beats having them taking selfies in their cells with the latest Iphones. There's prisons in the UK where the prisoners practically control the prison and the officers have to keep them sweet by giving them 'luxuries'. Maybe they could pick fruit after Brexit? Cheap labour for the farmers and a bit of extra money for the cons once they get out of prison. Win-win.

Well, here's a thought: Keep your nose clean, don't break any laws, stay the hell out of trouble, and you won't wind up in prison. It's a simple policy that's not only worked for me, but for hundreds of millions around the entire world. Those whining about the way they're treated in prison ought to try it sometime. You don't end up serving a prison sentence just for voicing an unpopular opinion...unless you're Dinesh D'Souza or living in Britain, that is. Let's hear it for Tommy Robinson.

In principle I would not be against paying prisoners less than minimum wage for their work, but only if the prisons are state owned and strictly directed at the rehabilitation of prisoners. Their work should serve as a means of rehabilitation (teaching them working skills that may help them in their search for a job outside, having them experience what it's like to work and using it as a tool to correct their behaviour and mindset, etc.). _However_ , in America the prisons are *much* less rehabilitation-oriented than here in Europe, as well as privately owned. Prisoners in America are more used as low to zero wage slaves to benefit the corporate owners of the prisons than being taught how to function in society when they get out.
Here in the Netherlands, prisoners earn just as little, but the work they do is specifically offered to them with the objective to teach them how to behave responsibly, how to get things done in a group, as a pastime for the prisoners (they may choose which work to do and most work is light. I've been to a prison for women, where they offer sowing, packaging and several even lighter tasks). And importantly, this is EXTRA. They may also choose not to work at all. If they choose to work, they get benefits in how they get treated in prison (more freedoms, progression to the next level of the rehabilitation programme due to good behaviour and a very small amount of money). If they choose not to work, that may have negative consequences such as a downgrade in their rehabilitation programme due to refusing to work with the prison. Near the end of their time, the women were even allowed to work outside of prison in actual businesses in the nearby town (I think for a full wage) as a test of trust and last stage of rehabilitation.
So long story short, I think a low/zero wage job for prisoners is a good thing, but only if it is specifically designed to benefit them and if it can't be forced upon them. A corporate prison employing low/zero wage prisoners for monetary gain is modern slavery.

+Casi Paul Thats all well and good too. Why they wasted money producing it I dont know. The prison system in America will never change. Not without a serious number of people and guns anyway, and that shits not going tk happen because much like the rest of the world most Americans have lost a spine and decided their monotonous lives of wake up, work until miserable, go to bed, repeat is so valuable they would rather not risk it.

First of all...slaves back in the day were NOT committing nor convicted of crimes other than being of color and being captured into slavery. Criminals are convicted and many have done horrendous crimes (not speaking about the truly innocent unjustly convicted) my view, these things are separate.

This whole system was originally developed so that the south could effectively enslave blacks again. Many freed slaves ended up working on the plantations they were freed from over petty crimes. The south even passed laws that they knew would disproportionally affect the black population just to get more in prison. Also, this practice creates a dangerous precident: prisons profit from prisoners. That means the more they have, the more money they make, thus the whole system is designed to encourage crime rather than prevent it. Its why America has by far the largest re-incarceration rate in the country. Because prisoners are money for some people. In America, virtually everyone who leaves prison ends up going back in. America is also the only country where the percentage chance of re-incarceration is in the double digits. The situation is seriously that bad. Also, prison labor has resulted in an increasing shortage of jobs. Yes, jobs are disappearing, but its not due to immigrants as many claim (in fact, the number of immigrants has been declining for years, with a particular exodus occurring after Trump's election). Most of the jobs lost are due either to automation or prison labor. Even if you ignore what prisoners have to go through, this system is highly detrimental on the country as a whole and on top of that the system is encouraged do the exact opposite of what a justice system is supposed to do; they're encouraged to increase crime rather than decrease it. And with the economy declining, this kind of exploitation is only growing. And of course there's the issue of blacks comprising a much higher percentage of the prison population than they do of the general population. If you haven't seen the news, black people can have the cops called on them for stupid reasons that a white person would never have to deal with. I mean recently a black man had the cops called on him because his bank was in disbelief of his 4-digit paycheck. Seriously. Months before that there was also an incident of a black man having the cops called on him because he took a nap on a bench, on his own college campus. And there's innumerable stories of blacks having the cops called on them for simply walking into a store, nothing else. The reason there's so many blacks in prison is because they're being put in prison for crimes that whites are never accused of. And it all dates back to the south's attempt to re-enslave its slaves.
