Security flaw allows any fingerprint to unlock a Samsung Galaxy S10
Security flaw allows any fingerprint to unlock a Samsung Galaxy S10
Day ago
The Samsung Galaxy S10's fingerprint reader has been balky from day one, with users reporting it could be unlocked with a 3D-printed fingerprint. Worse, a buyer recently discovered that if you install a third-party screen protector, a non-registered user could unlock the phone. Now, Samsung has acknowledged the problem and promised to patch it soon, according to Reuters. "Samsung Electronics is aware of the case of the S10's malfunctioning fingerprint recognition and will soon issue a software patch," the company told Reuters in a statement. The problem has been deemed serious enough that an online bank in South Korea, KaKaobank, has advised owners to switch off fingerprint recognition until it's resolved. HTC Vive Cosmos review: Is it worth $699?
HTC Vive Cosmos review: Is it worth $699?
The battle for at-home virtual reality started with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive -- but these days things are getting complicated. The Oculus Quest proves solid standalone VR is possible, and Valve is pushing the limits of high-end VR with the Index. Now here comes the Vive Cosmos, HTC's first true successor to the Vive and business-focused Vive Pro. Technically, the Cosmos is an upgrade in just about every way, but there's just one problem: It costs $699, which makes it far more expensive than the Oculus Quest ($400) and Rift S ($400). The Cosmos's price is a baffling strategic decision by HTC when the competition is so strong. Pixel 4 hands-on: Google goes dual-camera
3 days ago
Google is back with the Pixel 4 smartphone. The Pixel line has been a leader in photo quality, but recently the single-lens Pixels have lagged behind as competitors have added multiple lenses and sensors. The Pixel 4 steps up the game with an added telephoto lens, and plenty of refined photography smarts, from improved HDR to an astrophography mode. Google also added in a new radar sensor for hands-free control, but is it enough to stand out from the competition? Google's Nest division announced a new version of its Home mini, now called the nest Mini. The device looks identical, but comes with a wall-hook and a totally redesigned sound system. In addition, Nest is launching a new mesh Wifi system that incorporates the Mini's new speaker system into its access points. Add in new software that improves how all these devices interact with you and deal with background sounds, and your home just got smarter. Pixelbook Go hands-on: a refined Chromebook, but still pricey
Pixelbook Go hands-on: a refined Chromebook, but still pricey
4 days ago
Google's original Pixelbook was an odd device, a $1000 premium Chromebook, standing out among a crowd of ultra-inexpensive Chrome OS devices. But despite the price, it attracted diehard fans with its bold design and powerful performance. The Pixelbook Go is an attempt at a follow-up for the mainstream. It's similarly high-performing but with a friendlier aesthetic. At $650, though, it's still a premium device in the world of Chrome OS, and it faces stiff competition. Samsung Galaxy Fold, again: Hard to love, harder to hate
Samsung Galaxy Fold, again: Hard to love, harder to hate
4 days ago
The Galaxy Fold lives. I don't just mean in the vague "Samsung bounces back from a fiasco" sense, either. My Galaxy Fold, which I've been tossing around for weeks, opening and closing it like a madman, mostly works the same as it did the day I unboxed it. Had the Fold failed again the way it did earlier this year, it might have been enough to seriously derail Samsung's grand, foldable ambitions. This review would've been totally different, too. I could've gotten on my high horse and said a few things about innovation at the expense of usability, with a dash of pro-consumer indignation to spice things up a bit. It would've been a fun read. But reality can be pretty banal sometimes. Because of that, we instead have to face a more complicated truth about the Galaxy Fold: You shouldn't buy one. Not because it's expensive, or because of its long-term potential for failure, although those are valid concerns. No, you shouldn't buy one because it's just not quite as thoroughly thought-out as a $2,000 phone should be. When I wrote our original review, I said that people who did splurge on one were paying for the privilege of being Samsung's guinea pig. Despite the company's thoughtful design fixes, that simply hasn't changed. Oppo's latest smartphone can be fully charged in 30 minutes

As teased last month, Oppo's latest flagship phone, the Reno Ace, is unveiled today. We already knew about the device's 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 feature which charges its 4,000mAh battery in just 30 minutes, thus setting an impressive record in the industry. What's surprising is perhaps the Gundam 40th anniversary edition Reno Ace: only 30,000 of these special units will be available, and both the phone and packaging come in matching designs that pay homage to the RX-78-2. I mean, just look at that cute protection case. Nikon Z50 hands-on: Nikon's mirrorless cameras get smaller in both size and price

Nikon has unveiled its first-ever APS-C DX mirrorless camera, the 20.8-megapixel Z 50. That makes two different camera systems launched a year apart, which is quite a pace for a conservative company like Nikon. The Z 50 is less than half the price of the Z 6, so it should appeal to a broader market, especially folks who already own Nikon DSLR lenses. Tesla's handy Smart Summon feature was hailed as the next big thing in motoring convenience when it was first announced earlier this year. Press a button and the car comes to you? Brilliant. The Hero 8 isn’t foolproof, but it’s heading in that direction. The clever new design and the new UI make this the friendliest GoPro yet for newbies and experienced users alike. For me, I’m actually excited about using a GoPro again, in a more creative way. Rather than routinely using it in the same mode all the time. Apple iPadOS review: A clear new direction

At the end of the day, I can’t help but feel that iPadOS 13 is a more significant update than iOS 13 - not only does it include more stuff, it also suggests we’ll start to see the feature gap between iPhones and iPads grow wider before long. Good. That’s how it should be - Apple has long insisted that the iPad represented its vision for the future of computing, and it’s about time the software powers it all steps it up. Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 review
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 review
In all my years testing smartwatches, I've landed on a few favorites. There was a time when the Fitbit Versa claimed ownership of my wrist, and for a spell the Wear OS-based Skagen Falster 2 was my go-to. But lately, I've found myself returning to Samsung's Galaxy Watch Active. Over the years, Samsung has refined its smartwatch into a stylish, comfortable and capable wearable. And Tizen OS tends to be more responsive, proactive and useful than the software on many other watches. (We described the watch face sizes in millimeters when we meant to use inches. Sorry for the confusion) Read our full story on Engadget: www.engadget.com/2019/09/27/samsung-galaxy-watch-active-2-review-price-release-date/ Get More Engadget: • Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/engadget • Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/engadget • Follow us on Instagram: instagram.com/engadget • Read more: www.engadget.com

OnePlus 7T hands-on: Useful upgrades at a reasonable price
23 days ago
OnePlus doesn't want its fans to have to wait a year for a phone with the most advanced chipset available. So in 2016 it started launching new flagships about every six months. Beginning with the OnePlus 3T, the company began doing sort of mid-cycle upgrades, or "T" variants each year. Then with the OnePlus 7, the company introduced a "Pro" version, offering a higher-end device for those willing to pay a bit more. Things got even more confusing when OnePlus got ready to launch the T-versions. For one, there's no Pro version. At least not yet. Instead we're only getting a OnePlus 7T. And weirdly, it gains some features once exclusive to the 7 Pro. It even packs a more powerful processor, but sticks with a lower res screen. Nintendo Switch Lite review: Pure portability
Nintendo Switch Lite review: Pure portability
28 days ago
The Switch Lite is for everyone who found the original Switch too big. Really, that's it. By going with a smaller screen and fixed controllers, Nintendo has crafted something that feels more like a genuine portable console. The Switch Lite is significantly lighter and more comfortable to hold, it can finally fit into your pocket and, at $200, it's $100 less than the Switch. The major downside: There's no more support for TV output. The Switch Lite is purely focused on portability, but I don't think many gamers will mind. HP Elite Dragonfly first look: A light business notebook
HP Elite Dragonfly first look: A light business notebook
Month ago
HP is chasing superlatives again. Last year, the company launched the Spectre Folio -- the first laptop made out of leather. It also trotted out the first 15-inch laptop with an AMOLED screen at CES this year, and battled rival Dell to be the first to deliver a gaming notebook with a 240hz display. It’s continuing its mission to make records with the new Elite Dragonfly. With that name, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the latest Avenger, but no. HP is claiming it is the “world’s lightest 13-inch business convertible.” That’s right, it’s the lightest laptop with a bunch of caveats attached! Apple iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max review
Apple iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max review
Month ago
What does it mean for a phone to earn the name "Pro"? Lots of power, for one. Usually great cameras. And software robust enough to handle arduous tasks with ease. The new iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max certainly tick all these boxes, and - as you might expect - they're the best iPhones Apple has ever made. The thing is, I say that every year and it's true each time, but it doesn't really sum up how I feel about the new iPhone Pros after having tested them for a while. These are both excellent devices, and represent Apple at the peak of its smartphone game. But are they dramatically better than the premium phones the company gave us last year? Well, yes and no. There are plenty of additions and improvements here, but when it comes to day-to-day use, their impact on the overall iPhone experience can seem muted. Ultimately, I have my own theory about why these phones get the "Pro" moniker: Because some of the changes here are so subtle that it would take a pro to notice them, much less appreciate them. Vivo NEX 3: A bezel-less 5G phone with a 64-megapixel camera

Whether you like it or not, 5G is coming, and a handful of brands are already offering compatible devices in select markets. The latest to jump on the 5G bandwagon is Vivo with its NEX 3 5G, which is a flagship smartphone that doesn't look too bad. It comes with Qualcomm's top-tier Snapdragon 855+ chipset, along with a "Waterfall FullView" curved display, a triple set of rear cameras (including a 64-megapixel one), a faster pop-up front camera and a few other bonuses. The Chinese company is already in talks to bring this device to Europe, and if all goes well, there's a small chance that this may even land in the US. Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 review: Good notepad, bad notebook
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 review: Good notepad, bad notebook
Month ago
While the rest of the industry may have given up on making premium Android tablets, Samsung isn't quitting just yet. It still believes Google's software has the potential to power superthin and light 2-in-1s, and so it recently unveiled a new version of its hybrid tablet. The Galaxy Tab S6 is a 10.5-inch device that's designed for people who need to get work done on the go. It comes with an upgraded S Pen that features so-called Air Gestures for remote control of your apps; enhanced handwriting recognition to sort out your notes; and a redesigned keyboard cover (sold separately). As with previous Samsung tablets, you can expect a beautiful display, long battery life and capable performance. What really stands out about the Tab S6, though, is the S Pen, which is included in the $649 price. The stylus makes the device a really good digital notepad, but the Tab S6 still isn't quite the "laptop with the mobility of a tablet" that Samsung claims it is. When Apple announced a new base model iPad with a larger screen and a smart connector, I was hooked. I've been fixated with buying a new iPad precisely because of the smart keyboard folio, but it's been a little pricey. Apple just unveiled the newest Apple Watch (we're up to the Series 5 now) and -- I mean this in the nicest way -- but there isn't much to see. Whereas last year's model, the Series 4, ushered in a new, larger screen and a built-in electrocardiogram test, the differences in the Series 5 are difficult to notice at a glance. Today's Apple demo room felt like more of a madhouse than usual, and the clear star of the day so far has been the iPhone 11 Pro. Among other things, the Pro represents the biggest shift to the iPhone's branding since the 4S kicked off a multi-year naming trend. There's much more to this phone than just a name change, though. It might not seem like the most exciting step forward from devices like the iPhone XS and XS Max, but there are a few things here that really help the flesh-out the iPhone formula. The Pixel 4 may allow photography enthusiasts to do something they've never been able to do before with a smartphone camera: astrophotography. A seemingly official marketing video uploaded by Pro Android shows Google's newest smartphone will feature a dedicated mode for taking photos of the night sky. Unfortunately, the ad provides few details about how the new functionality will work other than to promise you'll be able to capture "even the stars." Based on the "hold still" prompt shown in the video, the one detail we can glean is that you won't need a tripod to use to take advantage of the feature. Android 10 is sort of a grab bag of interface changes, security enhancements, productivity tweaks and more. That’s not a problem, though - it’s more a side effect of having already built a stable, valuable OS. Yes, grand ambitions and flashy features are always exciting. What Android 10 really does, though, is polish what’s already there and lay down the groundwork for the big stuff that comes next, like foldable devices and 5G. This new version of Android, maybe more than any other, is about paving the way for the future. The ProArt Studiobook line sees Asus taking their expertise in making high-performance gaming computers and applying it to the world of professional laptops. But even if the Studiobook One forgoes the RGB lighting and styling of an ROG device, it still has a bit of that "performance at all costs" madness, cramming a $4000 Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 GPU into a remarkable slim design. This is accomplished through a number of design quirks, including moving the GPU and CPU into the display itself. It's totally nuts, and we want it. With 24GB of high-speed memory and performance nearly equal to its desktop counterpart, the mobile version should soundly thrash any GeForce RTX 2080 8GB or Quadro 5000 16GB laptop. Android 10 is live on Google's Pixel phones today
Android 10 is live on Google's Pixel phones today
Month ago
Android 10 might not have a delicious, dessert-themed name (and for good reason), but some of you can take solace in the fact that it's available to install today. As usual, Google Pixel owners are getting first crack at the update, and we wouldn't be surprised if other phone makers announce their own Android 10 upgrade plans throughout the day. That's no guarantee of news, though: OEMs like Samsung, Sony, Lenovo and others often handle these announcements at their own pace, and all Google will say on the matter is that it's "working with a number of partners to launch or upgrade devices to Android 10 this year." Samsung Galaxy Note 10 vs. Note 10 Plus
Samsung Galaxy Note 10 vs. Note 10 Plus
Month ago
For the first time since launching the Galaxy Note, Samsung has made two sizes of its flagship big-phone. The Note 10+ is a powerhouse, but frankly, I find the smaller Note 10 more intriguing. It has a slightly smaller screen than the Note 9, squeezed into a body that's about the same size as the S10. Yes, it does have a 6.3-inch screen. But it's shoved inside a handset that's ever so slightly larger than an iPhone XS, which has only a 5.8-inch display. This offers a way for people to get the series' hallmark S Pen in something a little less cumbersome than the typically oversized Note. Dell XPS 15 (2019) Review: A multimedia powerhouse

The new XPS 15 shows Dells is willing to listen and continue to improve its products. Highlights are a gorgeous OLED screen, and configuration options that range all the way from moderately affordable up to cutting edge. The one downside? Compared the competition, the XPS 15 could stand to lose a few pounds. Correction: In the video, we mistakenly said that OLEDs generally suck power. Instead, Cherlynn meant to say 4K panels generally suck power. We apologize for the error. Fitbit Versa 2 hands-on: Alexa made it even better
Fitbit Versa 2 hands-on: Alexa made it even better
Month ago
I really liked the Fitbit Versa when I reviewed it last year. For just $200, it offered a robust set of health-tracking tools in an attractive (if familiar) design, with a long-lasting battery to boot. So it's no surprise then, that the original Versa became Fitbit's best-selling smartwatch. When it came time for the company to unveil a successor, it didn't have much to improve. That didn't stop Fitbit from squeezing a few unexpected features (or expected, for those paying attention to the leaks), starting with adding an onboard microphone for Alexa support on the Versa 2. Oh, and the new watch still costs the same as its predecessor. This should be easy to test, but I can't find anyone that can make it work. I think if you enrol finger with specific screen protector then it only sees that. So any finger works. But it's reported that if you add the protector it then lets anyone in a previously secured phone. Which I doubt, I would guess it just won't work.

I love the iPad but I will never use it as a Computer. It''s a really great tablet to do specific tablet things. Because of its lightweight design and touchscreen there are some tasks that are better than on any other device. For example, I'm a musician and we use it for mixing our in-Ear monitors on stage. It's really efficient and I can't imagine using a laptop for that task... But as soon as you start doing regular computer stuff, like handling files or document processing you start to realize how crazy fast a regular keyboard (shortcuts!)&mouse setup on a windows based UI really is. And iPadOS won't change that... You can do more than before, but it's still nowhere near an actual Laptop when it comes to efficiency. And that's what makes especially the iPad Pro a weird product for me. Who should buy that? Who would really profit from the increased screen size and processing power? Maybe artists who use the pen? But that is such a niche thing. I think 95% of iPad users are perfectly fine with an iPadAir2 or newer. For ~200-300$ it's very good value. But for anything more it's just not worth it. -->Buying a Laptop for ~700$ and a regular iPad for ~300$ is so much better use of your money compared to buying an iPad pro for 1000$.

*HDR1000/600/400 and FALD* Aside from the various standards, within HDR there are at least three "levels" of HDR. HDR1000, HDR600 and HDR400. I don't know if HDTV's use below HDR1000 but monitors do. HDR600 and HDR400 should NOT EXIST. You end up with "crappy" HDR which causes issues so in most cases it's worse than turning HDR off and sticking with the normal SDR implementation of the game or video content... as for FALD that's Full Array Local Dimming which means there are multiple LED backlights (up to 512 currently AFAIK) which means the backlight for that area must TURN OFF COMPLETELY to avoid light leakage through the LCD panel. The PROBLEM with that is that if you have a cursor or say, a STAR (i.e. our sun) in a movie that uses even one single pixel in that screen then the LED backlight must be on supplying enough light for that pixel which means you get a grey background for that area which contrasts with the surrounding area if it's darker... it's not very noticeable in most video but it's VERY noticeable with dark backgrounds and a bright cursor so you get this annoying GLOW surrounding your cursor as it moves around the screen... so anyway, the ideal SCREEN would be something like HDR+ (HDR1000 with dynamic metadata) with individually controllable pixels (OLED). One step down would be something like regular HDR1000 and very small FALD zones such as 100 pixels (10x10) per LED backlight.
