Inside the opioid industry’s marketing machine
4 days ago
Beginning in the mid-1990s, Purdue Pharma helped change the culture of prescribing opioids through an extensive marketing campaign that persuaded the medical community that addiction was rare and patients were suffering needlessly, according to recently unsealed corporate documents and plaintiffs attorneys suing two dozen drug companies in a landmark federal case in Cleveland. In 2007, the federal government came down hard on Purdue, fining the drugmaker and three of its executives a record $634 million for misbranding its blockbuster OxyContin pill as safer and less addictive than other painkillers. But the attorneys argue that other drug manufacturers continued the aggressive marketing even after the Purdue fine, leading to a surge in opioid overdoses. Read more: wapo.st/2LqS2OY. ‘It’s unreal’: Three Baltimore men exonerated after 36 years in prison
14 days ago
Alfred Chestnut, Ransom Watkins and Andrew Stewart were teenagers when they were sentenced to life in prison in 1984 for murdering a Baltimore teen. They were exonerated and released on Nov. 25.
Dewitt Duckett, 14, was killed on Nov. 18, 1983, at a high school over his jacket. The three men convicted, when they were teenagers, said they were not at the school at the time of the killing. They were arrested on Thanksgiving Day in 1983. This Thanksgiving they get to spend it with their families.
The men became eligible for parole in recent years, but all three declined to accept responsibility for the slaying.
Maryland also has no working system to compensate exonerees even though such payments are allowed by state law. Read more: wapo.st/37EEYiv. Subscribe to The Washington Post on RUvideos: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

Fiona Hill focuses on her family's background in opening statement
19 days ago
Fiona Hill, the former White House adviser for Europe and Russia, talked about her family's background during her testimony in the House impeachment inquiry on Nov. 21. Hill, a British-born naturalized citizen, is a former senior U.S. intelligence official and Russia scholar, and an author of a respected biography of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Hill's testimony is important because she witnessed or heard about key early events, including a July 10 meeting between national security officials, Trump’s point person on Ukraine and Ukrainian officials at the White House. But she also is a proxy for one of the people Democrats most want to testify: former national security adviser John Bolton. She reported to him directly. Read more: wapo.st/33475nH.
